MARKETS ON EVIA
Whilst on Evia a visit to one its many street markets is an experience not
to be missed with many bargains to be found. These markets are normally for
a morning only since they move to different locations each day. Ask someone
local when and where one is and go along to see the wide range of fresh
local produce and other goods which are available for sale. The taste for
example of the summer fruit such as apricots, cherries, melons, peaches,
plums, nectarines, strawberries and water melons is so different and more
pleasurable than the supermarket produce which has travelled many miles.
Besides the fruit and veg there are often stalls selling fresh fish, cheese,
local honey (many different types), flowers, almond and pistachio nuts,
olives, herbs (try the mountain tea which is good for bad chests in the
winter), clothes, shoes, curtains, carpets, and kitchenware. At the large
markets you might even find a kitchen sink !!
Two large markets we visit are
Halkida Tuesday mornings
Vassiliko Sunday mornings
Smaller markets include
Drosia Sunday mornings Being near the tourist beach of Alykes, this
is one of the few places where shops
are open on a Sunday including the supermarkets, butchers and bakeries.
Kanithos Thursday mornings This is off the Halkida to Drosia road and
is one Graham regularly uses. (see photos)
However there are host of other markets to enjoy around the island."
Let us know the details of any markets you have been to on Evia and even
better still send us a photo so we can include it on this page.
