Sweet and Sour cherries
June is the month for cherries and they are sold literally by the truck load ! First to appear are the sweet cherries, just as strawberries are finishing(In Greece these ripen early in April and May). These are delicious served slightly chilled.
Later are the sour (or morello) cherries, which are used to make a number of different desserts and summer drinks. These are nearly black in colour. For lots of other recipes try this link
The local market( "Laiki" )
Sunday morning we normally go off to the local market to buy our fresh fruit for the week . Although supermarkets sell fresh produce the majority of fruit and vegetables are still sold at the traditional local "laiki". These have developed over the years to sell nearly everything - from kitchen utensils to clothes and garden plants!
Greek salad ( "Horiatiki" )
For most people from Northern Europe salad means lettuce. In Greece lettuce, if eaten at all, is a winter salad and most greeks prefer a finely sliced cabbage or something called "Horta" , which grows wild. As you travel around, you will often see families gathering it by the side of the road. There is even a myth that lettuce is an anti-aphrodisiac.
Greek salad is very simple to make and relies on good fresh ingredients. It should also be mixed up and served immediately. Try this link for a video recipe
